ABOUTVasim Osman is quiet, blunt, observant, and notoriously difficult to read. As a child, Vasim was extremely withdrawn and selectively mute. He was an exceptionally capable student, but rarely sought attention for it.
As he grows older, Vasim becomes more openly communicative, but he never becomes conventionally outgoing. He tends to speak plainly, dislikes unnecessary emotional performance. In general, he just has VERY little patience for pretending to feel something he doesn’t.He doesn’t enjoy being pressured into emotional conversations, His honesty can come across as cold because he doesn’t instinctively soften everything he says. At the same time, Vasim isn’t heartless or indifferent. He’s considerably softer than his detached exterior suggests.Vasim just has a complicated relationship with intimacy. He can struggle to understand what another person expects from him emotionally. Yet when he genuinely cares about someone, his loyalty is remarkably persistent.
Vasim was raised by his father, Junio Najib Osman Junio became a parent at nineteen and raised him as a single father. His relationship with his father is one of the most important relationships in his life.
Junio is affectionate, protective, and deeply involved in Vasim’s upbringing. All this guy wants to do is SMILE! Junio raised Vasim largely on his own, working multiple jobs and making enormous sacrifices to give his son a stable life. Vasim grew up watching his father work himself to the point of EXHAUSTION without ever making him feel like a burden. As an adult, much of Vasim’s determination comes from wanting to eventually give Junio the same security Junio spent his life trying to give him.Vasim grew up watching his father work tirelessly to provide for the both of them.
His childhood was also shaped by Gennady “Gena” Malchevsky, who became unusually important to Vasim's developmentGena was rough, independent, confrontational, and emotionally guarded, the complete opposite of Junio.
Yet he understood something about Vasim that many adults didn’t. Gena never treated Vasim’s quietness as a problem that needed to be solved. He didn’t constantly ask why Vasim wasn’t talking, never pressured him to socialize or demand emotional explanations.Gena’s influence helped Vasim become comfortable with silence, solitude, self-sufficiency, and emotional restraint. But Gena’s presence was complicated. His relationship with Junio became increasingly volatile due to his dangerous lifestyle and criminal involvement eventually leading to Gena's imprisonment,He soon disappears from Vasim’s life. Gena was the same man who had hurt his father, but he was also one of the first adults who made Vasim feel understood.Vasim feels forever conflicted about his stance with Gena. The truth is, he misses him lots!
Vasim eventually became a national-level Academic Decathlon competitor. At Nationals, his team wins their competition, with Vasim becoming the team’s MVP after answering every question correctly and consistently being the fastest competitor on his team.It is also where he first encounters Aleksandr “Sasha” Karpov, who competed from the opposing elite school. Vasim's performance catches the attention of the school competing against his team, offering him a full-ride scholarship. Neither of them knows what their relationship will eventually become.
Vasim eventually leaves his original school in Texas. He transfers to a prestigious school in the West Coast, where there, he develops a close and deeply affectionate relationship with Sasha.
Vasim learns to become more comfortable with intimacy, vulnerability, and openly expressing affection. His relationship with Sasha gave him space to grow.Vasim continues excelling throughout his education, earning scholarships that allow him to pursue higher education without placing the financial burden on his father. Junio had worked two jobs and saved money specifically so he could help cover Vasim’s future expenses, but Vasim works so hard that he ultimately never needs to use it. By the time Vasim graduates, Junio is finally able to relax knowing his son has built a future for himself.Vasim goes on to pursue his doctorate through scholarships, continuing to make his father incredibly proud. Eventually, after everything that began with one academic competition, Vasim marries Sasha.
